This great condition 1998 Martin D-28HW limited edition is a replica of Hank Williams’ 1944 D-28 released to commemorate what would have been Hank’s 75th birthday. Crafted with solid Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top With Abalone pearl square and diamond fretboard inlay and Hank’s signature at the 20th fret.
Features include forward shifted Golden Era style scalloped braces, Black Ebony fretboard and bridge with traditional long saddle, Style 28 fine herringbone top purfling, solid Mahogany modified V neck shape, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay, Grained Ivoroid bindings, Fossil Ivory pins, Nickel Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons and more.
Regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers and songwriters of the 20th century, Hank Williams recording 35 singles that reached the top 10 of the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart, including 11 that reached No. 1 during his heyday of the mid ’40s to early ’50s (he died in 1953 at the age of 29). His songs are legendary, and have been played on juke boxes across the world and covered by countless musicians fervently since. Almost always with a Martin guitar in his hands, his D-28 was his go-to guitar for stage and studio.
A prime Martin Brazilian Rosewood dreadnought, this rare ‘holy grail’ of tonewoods is highly sought after in a Martin D-28 build and is the same coveted wood used on the legendary D-28s and D-45s from the early 1930s to the ’60s. This Limited Edition D-28HW Hank Williams Sr. label is signed by CF Martin IV and numbered 108 of 150.
This guitar has had the center seam of the spruce repaired. No neck reset is needed, a lot of room on the saddle left over if you want to bring the action down. Currently set up for more of a bluegrass player with heavy strumming.
